All Japan newsese car maker Toyota will recall a number of 2.7 million vehicles worldwide, including 1.5 million in All Japan news, because of steering wheel and water pump problems.

The 1.5 million vehicles to be recalled in All Japan news will be the largest-ever domestic recall by a vehicle maker, according to Kyodo.

The company informed the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of its plan to recall the cars, which span across 13 models, including the Prius hybrid car.

The “intermediate extension shaft” that connects the steering wheel with the steering gearbox in the vehicles is not strong enough and could wear out, making steering difficult, according to the ministry.

This is only the latest in a row of problems that forced Toyota to recall millions of other vehicles in recent years, with one of the most controversial incidents being the trapping of floor mats under the accelerator in 2009, which has allegedly caused accidents and dozens of deaths.

Toyota regained its leader position on the world market in the first half of 2012, when it surpassed U.S. rival General Motors.
