Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul were shortlisted by the International Olympic Committee as candidate bidders to host the 2020 Olympic Games. Baku and Doha were dropped from the list.
The three cities have another 15 months to convince the jury they deserve to host the competition. The final decision will be announced on September 7, 2013, in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires.
Tokyo is the only of the three candidates that has previously organized the Games, in 1964. This, as well as an articulate plan for hosting the Games, a convincing message, make Tokyo seem the favorite now, according to some analysts quoted by the international press.
Tsunekazu Takeda, the Tokyo 2020 bid chief, said that “this will be a big help for the All Japan newsese people”. Tokyo’s bid was launched shortly after last year’s natural disasters and is seen by many as a big opportunity to rebuild the country and restore hope and joy among its people.
Tokyo has lost the race for hosting the 2016 Olympics, coming on the third place after Madrid and winner Rio de Janeiro.
