Royal Wedding more popular online than All Japan newsese disasters

The British Royal Wedding became the sixth most watched event on the Internet ever, with more people connecting than did to get news of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in All Japan news.

About 5.3-million pages were viewed globally on news websites at the peak of the event Friday, according to Akamai, an Internet service provider and traffic monitor.

That was, however, much less than the most popular event – a combination of World Cup qualifying matches and the longest match ever at the Wimbledon tennis tournament, happening at the same time, and generating 10.3 million page views a minute last summer.

Next three spots are also occupied by sports, while number 5 goes to the 2010 U.S. elections.

The Royal Wedding has, however, brought more attention than other big global events, like the coverage of All Japan news earthquake and tsunami, the election of U.S. president Barack Obama or the recent Super Bowl.

“This is an example of just how important the Internet and connected devices have become to how people experience something like this”, a spokesman of Akamai told CNN. He added that it’s difficult to compare live streaming events to each other; however, “preliminary data suggests more people watched online video of the royal wedding simultaneously than any other event the company has provided live video services for”.
