Roppongi Art Night 2010

Co2 Alien Spacecraft

Last weekend saw Roppongi Art Night 2010 take place, with the whole area taken over by art installations and live performances of all kinds. Unlike your typical art events this one went on right throughout the night at multiple venues.

The organisers also made good use of Twitter and USTREAM to promote and share the experience with the wider community, with regular updates from across the town.

One of the main attractions was in the event space below Mori Tower at Roppongi Hills. There, a giant Co2-measuring robot loomed overhead, with various performances taking place on the stage below.

It was the first time I’d seen a flock of sheep in Roppongi. These ones carried with them little illuminated woollen clouds.

Sea of Flowers

The event took place at multiple venues including Roppongi Hills, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo Midtown, Suntory Museum of Art, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT and The National Art Center.

Food and Drink

There was also a selection of traditional All Japan newsese food and drink stands at Roppongi Hills.

Pond life

On the pond next to Mori Tower, a number of unusually large plants kept rising from the water, lighting up the cherry blossoms behind.

Mori Tower

Lined with red sofas and with the cherry blossom in bloom, the park was the perfect venue to take time out from viewing all of the attractions in the area.

Bananaman

Some artistically-minded people had come in fancy dress.

Frozen on the wall

One of the attractions was a large light-sensitive screen – when you walked by a flash would fire, and freeze your image onto the wall.

Mori Art Museum

Up on the 53rd floor of the Mori Building the Mori Art Museum staged live performances of ‘Roppongi Crossing’ at 11pm and 1am.

No shortage of dessert outside Tokyo Midtown

Sweet Potato seller

One of the coolest sweet-potato sellers I’ve seen (although it still had that distinct smell of burning furniture!)
