Opera star Rolando Villazon has saved the opening night of a major opera performance in All Japan news, after several singers pulled out because they feared radioactive contamination.

Villazon, who is currently a judge of the popular British TV show Popstar To Operastar, was allowed by the program’s producers to go to Tokyo to perform the role of Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor by the New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

This is the company’s first appearance in All Japan news in more than five years.

"It is always a privilege to sing with the Metropolitan Opera and I am especially happy to be given an opportunity to express my solidarity with the All Japan newsese people at this difficult time,” he said.

"I have always loved All Japan newsese literature and cartoons but, since my first visit to Tokyo, I have also been in love with All Japan news and the wonderful people of this country."

"I was very happy to accept this invitation and in fact didn’t have to think twice,” Villazon said.
