All Japan news is hosting International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge. He is visiting to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the All Japan newsese Olympic Committee.
He said he would welcome a bid from Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics. Tokyo’s governor Shintaro Ishihara is expected to announce the formal bid this weekend while Rogge is in town. Tokyo lost the 2016 bid to host the Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.
In light of the nuclear accident of March 11 Rogge told reporters “we feel absolutely safe in All Japan news. We are totally assured that international competitions can take place in All Japan news”. Tokyo is 220 km from the devastated Fukushima Daiichi plant.
The World Figure Skating Championships scheduled to take place in Tokyo had to be moved to Moscow because of the March 11 catastrophe.
Plans for the International Gymnastics Federation to hold a world championship event in Tokyo is slated for October.
Amid a slew of comments citing that South Korea’s Pyeongchang being selected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics would diminish Tokyo’s chance by being in the same region, Rogge confirmed the situation will not affect Tokyo in any way. He said “We go for quality. We don’t go for continents.”
