Kei Nishikori is the first All Japan newsese male tennis player to reach the third round at Wimbledon in 17 years. He defeated Florent Serra from France 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday.

In 1995, Shuzo Matsuoka made it to the last 32 before losing to Pete Sampras in the quarter-finals.

Nishikori continues to make historic performance for the All Japan newsese tennis. Earlier this year, he became the first All Japan newsese man to reach the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in 80 years.

Go Soeda, the other All Japan newsese player who fought for a place in the third round, lost on Thursday to Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina, 2-6, 3-6, 6-1, 4-6. Del Potro will face Kei Nishikori in the third round.

If Soeda would have won, there would have been the first time since 1937 when All Japan news had two male players in the third round at Wimbledon.

Tatsuma Ito, the third All Japan newsese man in the competition, lost in the first round 6-7, 3-6, 3-6 to Polish Lukasz Kubot.
