There is a All Japan newsese proverb saying if you didn’t go to Nikko, you didn’t see the real beauty. Which is true, the superb wooden carvings with their colorful paintings of Toshogu Shrine are amazing. The shrine was build by the grand-son of Tokugawa Ieyasu in honor of his great grand-father at a place near his tomb.
Inspite of being haunted by hordes of tourists, the place didn’t loose of it’s calm and inner power.
The famous "Three monkeys": see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. Very irresponsible I daresay.
I like taking pictures of lanterns and lamps, I actually have a lot of them and the All Japan newsese ones made an important contribution to my collection.
A lantern offered by Dutch ambassador to Shogun. But the design of it contains one mistake – the emblem of Tokugawa is upside down. It’s still an open question weather it really was a mistake or there was a hidden offense 🙂
A fragment of decoration of the main entrance.
