north korea nuclearNorth Korean scientists and technicians involved in the country’s third nuclear test performed on February 12 arrived on Wednesday in Pyongyang to celebrate the test.

They “will spend significant days of Pyongyang visit, enjoying the greatest privileges and preferential treatment,” the official Korean Central News Agency reported, in a sign they could meet with leader Kim Jong Un, according to Kyodo news agency.

Citizens lined up on major streets to welcome the visitors arriving in buses, according to the Korean Central Television. The scientists are staying at the Pyongyang Koryo Hotel, where a large banner is displayed, reading “Successful third underground nuclear test!”

North Korea’s third nuclear test is estimated to be 2.5 times more powerful than the country’s previous test in 2009, according to a United States think tank.

The yield of the recent test is most likely around 12.5 kilotons, while the one of the 2009 nuclear test was about 5 kilotons, although the estimations are not certain, the American NGO Nuclear Threat Initiative said.

If the estimate is correct, it will prompt United States policymakers and others to view North Korea’s latest nuclear test as successful, Kyodo news agency states.
