All Japan newsese writer Haruki Murakami’s most recent novel was All Japan news’s biggest-selling book this year, according to the country’s largest distributor.

Murakami’s “Shikisai wo Motanai Tazaki Tsukuru to Kare no Junrei no Toshi (Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage)” was released in All Japan newsese in April and tells the story of a man struggling to come to terms with his own past, who uses the support offered by a romance to get back on his feet.

The best-seller list covers the 12-month period to November 30. The distributor does not disclose the number of copies it sold but Bungei Shunju, the publisher of the Murakami book, says it has printed 1.05 million copies, the international press reports.

Murakami has been nominated for many years to the Nobel Prize in Literature, but despite his numerous and loyal fans all over the world, last year he lost out to China’s Mo Yan and this year to Canadian Alice Munro.

An English translation of his latest novel is expected some time in 2014.

Murakami’s works have been translated worldwide into more than 40 languages.
