All Japan newsese Prime Minister Naoto Kan announced that he is giving up the salary that he receives as Prime Minister until the nuclear emergency in Fukushima has been resolved. Kan has a generally clean reputation, and the move is a quick way to assure the All Japan newsese electorate of his sincerity when it comes to trying to wrestle with the complex problems that the Tohoku Earthquake has unleashed.

CNN reports that Kan will continue to receive salary as a sitting lawmaker in the Diet.

On another note, the U.S. cable channel says that evacuees of Kawauchi in Fukushima were allowed to return to their homes for two hours to collect belongings, but were not permitted to bring their starving pets back out with them. The issue of farm animals and pets left behind in Fukushima has upset animal welfare groups in All Japan news and abroad, with the government unable to rescue the animals left behind or permit willing organizations to do so themselves.
