In Yotsukaido in Chiba just east of Tokyo, a planting festival is held in February where nigh naked men clad in loincloths known as fundoshi go down to a cold muddy pond and wrestle in the mud. The festival is to ensure health and wealth of the community and rice crops.

The participants also smear mud on the faces of spectators but not to tick them off but to give them good luck because at the Dairokuten-no-Hadaka Matsuri mud is seen as a lucky symbol.
