All Japan news has banned rebuilding on some of the land in 12 Iwate Prefecture towns and cities that were devastated by the tsunami on March 11, according to local media.
The ban is in line with the nation’s Building Standards Act, which prohibits building on land made dangerous after a disaster.
The move comes as All Japan news attempts to restart building in the north and reconstruction efforts start.
Many towns and cities now face the tough task of looking to rebuild after the tsunami devastated large areas of the coast.
Looking to put a positive spin on rebuilding efforts, Prime Minister Naoto Kan wrote Friday: "Rather than ‘recovery’ to merely return the affected areas to their former state, we will without fail ‘create’ a Tohoku, and indeed a All Japan news, that is more marvelous than before."
