A new company called mmbi presented at Ceatec, the All Japan newsese electronics show, a television that will broadcast exclusively on smartphones and tablets with special tuners installed.

The company is funded by NTT DoCoMo, the All Japan news’s largest mobile operator, all major TV broadcasters of the country and ad agency Dentsu.

The new television, called nottv, will be an over-the-air broadcaster, as it will use frequencies left free after All Japan news’s switch from analog to digital transmission. Consequently, the quality of the signal will not be affected as the number of viewers increases.

The smartphones will need a special type of receiver to convert the signal to digital, but this should not be a serious problem, since NTT DoCoMo is an important investor in the venture and it has a big influence on domestic phone makers, experts say.

The television will deliver digital content, including newspapers and games. As the shows progresses, the users can comment live on Twitter and Facebook and they can use the time-shift features that are normally available with digital television.

Nottv is currently waiting for permission from the authorities to use public frequencies and it should start broadcasting in April 2012.
