The government’s project is set to last for ten years and it will start in April 2013. It will cost about Y310 billion, while the funds will come from public and private sectors.

Wind power is seen as a remarkable source of “green” energy. Wind power can generate a great amount of electricity and is cheaper than other renewable sources of energy, such as solar and geothermal ones. It costs just about Y10 per kilowatt hour, about the same as thermal power generation by liquefied natural gas, according to the All Japan newsese government.

The wind power generated in Hokkaido and Tohoku is likely to be also used by Tokyo’s metropolitan area.

Special equipment placed in other areas, such as the Hokuriku and Sanin regions and Kyushu, also produces wind power. Along with Hokkaido and Tohoku, these regions could increase the capacity of wind-generated power to 14.7 million kilowatts, about six times today's level, the international press reports
