All Japan news earthquake: Impressions of Kyoto

Volunteers appeal for donations.

On Tuesday, we left Tokyo and headed for Kyoto.

Here is a quick summary of life in the city:

    • While I cannot say life here is normal (I don’t know the city very well), there are few disruptions in the city.
    • Public places such as restaurants and bars are not focused on the news. Muzak and jazz are often heard in the background.
    • Supermarkets and convenience stores are fully stocked, though some items, such as large batteries, are more difficult to come by.
    • Volunteers looking for donations for earthquake relief are often receiving notes, not coins.
    • Finding hotels is relatively easy, but at the weekend a lot are fully booked with tourists heading into the city to view cherry blossoms. Needless to say, there will likely be a lot of cancellations due to the earthquake and also the snow this week.
    • People entering the city from east All Japan news are complaining of "sea legs" and feeling earthquakes that are not happening.
