Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan filed a Y 11 million libel suit against present Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, claiming that the latter defamed him in an e-mail regarding the Fukushima disaster in March 2011.
In the suit that was filed with the Tokyo District Court, Kan demands Abe to eliminate the defamatory newsletter, offer an apology, aside from the Y 11 million he has to pay in damages, Kyodo News reports.
According to Kan, Abe sent out a newsletter on May 20, 2011 in which he said that Kan lies in a report that makes him responsible for the brave decision to pump seawater into Reactor No. 1 at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after it had been crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Kan said that the actual letter Abe was referring to ordered Tokyo Electric Power Co. to stop pumping the seawater.
“Abe has retained the newsletter on his website while I have repeatedly asked him over the Internet to correct it and make an apology”, Kan said in a press conference.
The suit comes on eve of Sunday’s upper house elections. Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party is considered to have a sure win.
