Many firms in All Japan news employ girls of high school age to provide massage and other services to men. Although police have started to close their businesses after the labor ministry called the practice a harmful job and forbidden it for people aged under 18, some of these companies chose a more discreet business model.

The companies moved their teen-aged female employees to the street, in order to directly ask their male customers for paid “dates”. This kind of encounter is also known as JK rifure, in which JK stands for joshi kosei, or high school girl, and rifure is an abbreviation of reflexology, a type of massage.

Girls usually ask for around Y4,000 ($40) for 30 minutes of JK. “Do you want to go out with me? We can go to a maid cafe, have something to eat, go shopping,” said a 17-year-old girl wearing a high school uniform after handing out a flier.

The girl works for one of the JK rifure businesses that have developed recently, according to the international press.  She said she is working for eight months and that she goes on two or three “dates” every day, for six hours, mostly with men aged in their 30s and 40s.

Some of her customers want to go shopping, go to video game arcades or walk together. When it comes to propositions for sex, the girl answered: “If I have to, I just run away. It is not scary at all.”

The girl earns around Y100,000 ($1,000) per month. “I work with about 10 other girls. It is not the sex industry and we are not doing anything bad,” she said. “I can make money this way. There is no way I would switch to other part-time jobs.”
