Drivers who hide their medical condition to get new penalties

Drivers who fail to report a condition of health that could affect their performance, like epilepsy and dementia, may see new penalties coming their way, according to a plan by the National Police Agency in All Japan news.

A panel of experts reviewed the current licensing system after a series of deadly accidents involving epileptic drivers. Six pupils were killed in 2011 in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, by a crane truck operated by a man who lost consciousness, according to Kyodo.

The team of experts made a recommendation that the road traffic law should be updated accordingly.

Reactions are mixed so far, with some epilepsy patients saying that the new law may make drivers to hide their condition rather than report it.
