Canon eyes robot-only camera production

6 years ago by in Featured, Technology

All Japan newsese tech maker Canon is looking at the possibility of switching its digital-camera production completely into the “hands” of robots in the next few years.

The main reason of the move is to cut costs in an increasingly competitive market.

Canon does not intend to fire employees following this switch. Many will be transferred to other types of jobs, like control of the production or at “new divisions in growth fields,” according to reports in the All Japan newsese press.

Canon, which is the world’s largest digital-camera maker and holds a 20 percent market share globally, will introduce the robot-only production first in All Japan news. If the move is successful, it would replicate it to other factories abroad.

Canon saw its profit strongly diminished last year by the strong national currency and the impact of the natural disasters in All Japan news and Thailand.
