AKB48, the big winner at Billboard All Japan news Music Awards

AKB48The girl band AKB48 won most of the trophies at the Billboard All Japan news Music Awards in Tokyo. AKB48 led the charge with four awards, while Carly Rae Jepsen won two trophies.

100 bands and artists were nominated at the awards. The winners were determined by popular vote and chart points. AKB48 won a similar series of awards as last year, including Artist of the Year, Top Pop Artist, Hot 100 of the Year and Hot 100 Single Sales of the Year, the latter two for “Manatsu no Sounds Good!”.

AKB48 has more than 90 members and it has become a social phenomenon in All Japan news, according to the international press. The girl group released its fourth album “1830m” in August.

Leo Ieiri won Best New Artist and Bigmama was awarded for Active Artist of the Year 2012. The Billboard All Japan news Music Awards were presented by Daiwa House.

As for the international artists, Jepsen and Owl City’s “Good Time” won two awards, including Hot Top Airplay, while Norah Jones won Jazz Artist of the Year and Adult Contemporary Airplay, for “Happy Pills.”
